Mammoth Bark Straight Divot Tool #1
SKU:
This straight Mammoth Tusk divot tool was made from a very thin piece of Mammoth bark. Mammoth bark comes from the outer layer of the tusk and can have a wide variety of colors depending on what types of minerals were absorbed from the surrounding soil during the 10.000 years or more that it was buried. While the inner tusk was made from a material called dentine, the bark layer was made from a much harder material called cementum. This extra hardness makes the bark much more resistant to decay, and the centuries of exposure to the elements will often cause it to delaminate from the inner tusk. That was the case with this piece of bark and the resulting material was only about 3/16" thick. The dark area on the top of the tool was the part of the bark that was in contact with the soil and the striated area on the back interfaced with the inner tusk. The material between these two layers has a very wood-like texture as seen in the thumb indent.
Even though the outer bark has been discolored from exposure to minerals, this piece has not been fossilized by a complete mineral exchange and is not at all brittle. It has a warm feel, rather like wood, but like any ivory takes a polish that's as smooth as glass. Dimensions are approximately 2.85"L x .8"W x .2"D.
